  • Understanding Sheet Metal Manufacturing Processes

Sheet metal is the backbone of countless products and structures, from industrial enclosures to architectural features. At BMP Metals, we specialize in sheet metal manufacturing processes that combine accuracy, efficiency, and durability. The process begins with material selection—choosing the right grade and thickness to match the project’s performance and aesthetic requirements. From there, precision cutting methods such as laser cutting shape the material to exact dimensions. Laser cutting technology plays a central role in shaping sheet metal with precision. Our advanced laser cutting machine produces clean edges and intricate details while maintaining tight tolerances. This capability allows us to handle complex designs efficiently and reduces the need for secondary processing. Once the parts are formed, welding and assembly bring everything together. Final finishing steps, such as powder coating protect the surface and enhance appearance. Throughout each phase, we prioritize quality control and compliance with industry standards. If you’re planning a sheet metal project or exploring manufacturing options, our team is here to help. Grade 12 Physics Class Design Rockets to be Launched With 3D Printed Parts Students Posing With Their Model Rocket This Friday, the grade 12 students of Mr. Ray-Zarate university physics class at Burlington Central High School are designing, building, testing and launching model rockets. This project is a part of their dynamics, energy and momentum, and kinematics units. The students were grouped into teams and are responsible for learning as well as demonstrating proficiency in areas of physics and design to produce successful and reliable model rockets. According to Mr. Ray-Zarate, “Students are required to design and build all rocket components from scratch. This will allow students to explore and develop skills in computer aided design, manufacturing and team dynamics.” Students are required to understand the aerodynamic forces, momentum, uniform circular motion, kinematics and ballistic trajectories as a result of this exciting project. According to the students, these “sick” rockets need to be able to withstand an average of 5 launches, and will have an altimeter in the nose cone to measure the altitude of their rockets to be recorded and studied for a final lab report. With the help of BMP Metal’s 3D Printing capabilities , some students were able to print their nosecones out of a durable plastic material. According to Jackie So (pictured on the left), the students faced many challenges when trying to figure out the best method of producing a nose cone for their rocket. “The nose cone that BMP made for us greatly improved our rockets max altitude. The nose cone has to be super lightweight and must be able to take the forces of it flying through the air. [When] we attempted to print our own nose cones, [the] printers at our school [made nose cones] almost double the weight of the nose cones BMP printed for us. This is a big concern as we have a max weight limit that we must comply to in order for our rockets to launch.” Jackie plans to attend Carleton University for Mechanical Engineering this upcoming September after he graduates. FIRST Robotics Team 2386 - 2019 Jackie, as well as a few other students in the class, are a part of the FIRST Robotics Team 2386, and has competed in regional and national robotics competitions over the years. The team first began in 2008, with Chris Arnold, the manufacturing teacher at BCHS, being the lead for 22 years. Our very own Gordon Nicholls has also been a founding member since the team first started, and continues to work with the kids on their projects and mentors them every year. During this year’s robotics season, Jackie highlighted BMP’s involvement by helping the team create the chassis of their robot. It was constructed from a sheet of steel that was cut and folded to precise dimensions designed by the students. BMP helped the students meet a weight quota for their robot in the competition, and have learned many manufacturing skills and techniques from working closely with Mr. Nicholls. Good luck to Jackie and the other physics students on their rocket launch! BMP Metals Inc. is a proud supporter of local education programs by providing our future leaders with the tools necessary to achieve incredible accomplishments. To infinity and beyond!

  • What Canada Could Have in Store for the Future

Businesses in Canada & the Potential of our Economy As Canada turns 152 this year, we thought it would be fitting to highlight some of the greatest things about Canada. Here are a few quick facts about the great white north: 1. Did you know that Canada has the longest coastline of any other country in the world? 2. Not only that but 31% of the land is covered in forestry. (10% of the world’s forests!) 3. 77% of the world’s maple syrup is produced in Quebec, Canada. 4. Canada’s national parks are actually bigger than most countries. 5. The Toronto Raptor’s 2019 Championship win certainly was a momentous time in Canadian sports history, but did you know that the sport was actually invented by a Canadian? Photo by Guillaume Jaillet, in Westmount, Quebec. Another interesting fact about Canada from a business perspective, is that it ranks 12th on the 2018-19 global competitiveness rankings provided by the GCR, via the World Economic Forum. This number is based on the well-developed and diversified economy with the 10th largest GDP by nominal and 16th by PPP. The Economy It comes as no surprise that the backbone of Canada’s economy is natural resources. Thanks to its enormous coastline (fishing) and the forest land (wood logging), these industries, as well as mining, energy and agriculture make up for about 55% of Canada’s total exports. The remainder of Canada’s exports mostly include machinery, equipment, automotive products and other manufactured goods, making Canada’s total exports almost as diverse as the country itself. Despite the economic slowdown in 2015 and 2016, it was shortly followed by a broad-based economic growth in 2017 and 2018 that created jobs and brought the national unemployment rate down to a four-decade low. Although decrease in unemployment rates might suggest economic growth through consumer spending and real estate activity, this is unfortunately not the case. The average Canadian household debt has risen and economic growth has slowed. In the fourth quarter of last year, the Canadian economy slowed and negligible annualized growth was weak with an increase of 0.4%. This means that exports and investment need to become bigger contributors to economic growth. Currently, exports make up approximately ⅓ of the total value of the economy. The U.S. is by far the nation’s biggest trading partner, with 70% of exports and 60% of imports being exchanged with our neighbor to the south. Meanwhile, Asian importers purchased about 12% of exports, while buyers in Europe consumed about 8.5%. Although the U.S. recently rescinded a crippling 25% tax on Canadian steel and 10% tax on aluminum, it still significantly impacted Canadian manufacturers including BMP Metals Inc. and its competitors. That being said, relying heavily on one trading partner can be risky, and while the American protectionist attitude under the Trump administration continues, souring relations with our preferred trade partner continues to put the Canadian economy in danger. In these times of uncertainty, our nation must pursue the drivers of productivity to increase the country’s competitiveness. The federal government only spends about 1.6% of its GDP on research and development (0.4% below average among member countries in the OEDC), and Canadian businesses struggle to compete with U.S. firms that have benefited from tax reform. On the bright side, there is a great deal of potential that remains untapped for Canada. Increase in technological development, improvements on openness and government aid will all determine whether or not Canada finds itself in one of the top ten spots next year. The future can be bright for Canada’s economy, but in the meantime, crack those cool drinks open, enjoy the fireworks, and let’s celebrate Canada Day 2019. Happy Birthday Canada! • “When women succeed, everyone succeeds” - BMP Metals Inc. to Receive Women Entrepreneurship Funding

MP Sahota announces a federal investment in BMP Metals Inc. as part of the government’s initiative towards economic empowerment of women-led businesses through the “Women Entrepreneurship Strategy”. Ms. Ruby Sahota, Member of Parliament for Brampton North, has announced that BMP Metals has been approved for an investment of up to $100,000, in support of this local, women led business. “The women entrepreneurs and business leaders of Brampton make incredible contributions to our economy and community every day,” said MP Sahota, as goals for the funding will implement a growth strategy to scale up the business and create jobs for the Brampton community. (Pictured from left to right: Johanne Rappoccio, MP Ruby Sahota, Lori Holjevac, Robert Bedard) The Government of Canada recognizes that fostering diversity and inclusion in the workplace is integral to creating an economy that benefits everyone. The full and equal participation of women in the economy is essential to Canada's future competitiveness and prosperity. Statistics show that only 16% of small to medium sized enterprises are majority women-owned, only 10% of high growth firms are owned by women and only 8% of women-owned businesses export. Through the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy and Fund, Canada aims to double the number of majority women-owned businesses by 2025 and add $150 billion in incremental GDP by 2026. MP Sahota checking out the BMP facility The objective of the fund is to provide support for women to grow their businesses and facilitate their pursuit of opportunities in markets abroad. “I’m proud to be a part of a Liberal government that takes women’s economic empowerment seriously” says MP Sahota, “from tackling pay equity to modernizing parental leave, this government is taking action on gender equality because when women succeed, we all succeed.” BMP Metals has been and continues to be a proud supporter of diversity in the workplace. We are honoured to receive the recognition and support of the Federal Government and hope to inspire other businesses to follow suit.
